life is fascinating

please rob me #pleaserobme

The idea of this post came from my beloved sis.  She was complaining that her husband was so crazy about mobile phone and location (GPS type) service that he tells the world (internet) where he is everywhere he goes.  This may sound cool, people knows where you are all the time.  I can see this be really helpful when

  • thieves go online to check whether the owner of a particular house is gone on vacation so they can take their own sweet time to “move” your belongings on your behalf
  • your boss wants to know exactly how long you are having lunch while claiming you’re meeting client at their office
  • your children want to know when parents will get home to stop them from watching tv, playing games, etc
  • your coworkers want to know where you are so they can provide evidence to your boss you come to work at 10am and leave at 3pm
  • your husband/wife wants to know where you are (that might not be such a bad idea)

OK, there are so many *good* reasons to use this type of service.  Why not everyone using this service?  I’m predicting that soon there will be new website tells thieves which house to rob or where to kidnap a rich people.

Instead of looking at this type of service of publishing your location, we should look at it differently — how about “please rob me”, “please kidnap me”, “please follow me”, etc.

Ehm, you stole our idea? On the 15th of February we launched http://pleaserobme.com

No, my sis did not stole your idea. She got the idea from me. I first thought of this problem when my husband was using google map on his blackberry to let everyone knows where he was. This must be sometime last year. I heard of burglar and gps/location problem from the news, not from your site. You are the first one who registered this site, not the first one who has this idea. Having said that, I think your intention is to create awareness, which I support.

there is good and bad idea to put the location of yourself for everyone to know.

can you imagine telling your partner you are outstation having meeting etc but when you are actually “located” in a hotel room when your partner google….that would be great isn’t it

as for the location of your place thru GPS you can actually put your address say somewhere near the actual addres. so the damn robber will go to the wrong address

we rely too much on technology
we become lazy
we become easy prey for robbers

for me a handphone will just do

Too high tech has its advantages and disadvanrages.

Remember not to put your actual location as you are inviting to rob you and your home.

GPS is good for you if you are travelling to an unfamiliar place but definately to invite uninvited guest

Use the technology to improve your life and security and not the other way round
